Berger Montague served as co-trial counsel and co-chair of the plaintiffs’ discovery committee in this iconic litigation resulting in a record $5 billion punitive damages award in 1994 against the Exxon defendants as a consequence of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, one of the largest oil spills in United States history. The judgment was later reduced to $507.5 million pursuant to a U.S. Supreme Court decision. H. Laddie Montague, Jr. and Peter R. Kahana of Berger Montague shared (with the entire trial team) the 1995 “Trial Lawyer of the Year Award” given by the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice.
