BERGER MONTAGUE NAMED CO-LEAD COUNSEL FOR CONNECTICUT HEALTHCARE MONOPOLY CASE
PHILADELPHIA – A Teamsters healthcare benefits plan and a Connecticut public transit provider, on behalf of a proposed class of similarly situated health plans, have sued the healthcare network Hartford Healthcare Corp., accusing it of using anticompetitive practices to maintain inflated prices for health care services in a half-dozen regions of the state. The suit accuses HHC and its affiliates Hartford Hospital, Hartford Healthcare Medical Group Inc. and Integrated Care Partners LLC of monopolization and price fixing, among other things, in violation of the antitrust laws.
“We are pleased to have been appointed to lead this important case, and look forward to litigating alongside our co-lead counsel,” remarked Eric L. Cramer Berger Montague’s Chairman. “For years, HHC’s alleged anticompetitive practices have stood in the way of the competition that would have lowered prices and improved quality,” added Mr. Cramer.
Berger Montague Shareholder Dan Walker noted, “This antitrust case is an important step in helping spur competition and ultimately lower the cost of health care in Connecticut.” The Berger Montague co-lead team also includes Associate Hope Brinn.
Through the lawsuit, the proposed class seeks an injunction to stop HHC’s alleged anticompetitive conduct, as well as damages to compensate for the too-high healthcare costs they say they’ve incurred.
The plan and transit provider seek to represent a class of similarly situated healthcare benefit plans and insurers that have paid for services from the defendants over the past four years. They said the class would contain at least 100 payers that have been harmed by HHC’s conduct.
