Overview

Case Number: No. 900

Practice Area: Child Sex Abuse & Sexual Assault Consumer Protection

Case Status: Pending

Court: U.S. District Court for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas

The Glen Mills Schools (“Glen Mills”) was the oldest reform school and residential program in the United States for court-ordered boys, located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Students who were placed in the care of Glen Mills have alleged that for decades, they suffered rampant and horrific physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and maltreatment at the hands of those entrusted with its care and supervision. Glen Mills fostered a culture of fear, violence, and intimidation that it concealed from the outside world. In 2019, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services revoked the school’s licenses to operate as a result of the abuse. The Pennsylvania Auditor General issued a report finding that Glen Mills’ administrators and staff failed to protect the students in their charge and to comply with child abuse laws. An investigation by the Philadelphia Inquirer further revealed decades of child abuse and a culture of violence and secrecy.

Over 800 individual claims within the statute of limitation have now been asserted against The Glen Mills Schools and the consolidated litigation is pending in a mass tort proceeding in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, captioned In re: The Glen Mills Schools Litigation, Dkt. No. 900. Shanon J. Carson of Berger Montague has been appointed by the court as one of two Liaison Counsel for the consolidated plaintiffs.
