Berger Montague is Co-Lead Counsel in the massive Change Healthcare data breach case. The breach has crippled the U.S. healthcare system and how it has damaged healthcare providers and pharmacies. Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group that provides revenue and payment cycle management in the healthcare industry, announced on February 21, 2024 that a “cyber security issue” was causing a widespread network interruption. In the following days, healthcare providers and pharmacies across the country were essentially cut off from insurance payers as Change Healthcare, which reportedly processes 14 billion transactions per year, took its systems offline as a result of the data breach. Russian ransomware group ALPHV/BlackCat has claimed responsibility for the breach.
Healthcare providers and pharmacies are still feeling the impacts of the breach and Change Healthcare’s decision to take its systems offline. Providers are struggling to run their practices amid reduced cash flows and vital services patients rely on are at risk.
